My Mom and Brother are one of the First Pioneers in Ukraine Who Share Their Unique Story
"Out of some 8 million children living in Ukraine, 167,000 are registered with disabilities," stated United Nations Children's Fund. My brother Vova is one of those children. Vova has disabilities such as epilepsy, hyperactivity, and kidney failure. Despite his physical challenges he is a wonderful and a bright boy. However, it is not easy for a boy like him to find friends, study at school, and to socialize. There is just not enough resources in Ukraine, and particularly in the city where Vova lives.
Unlike in the US, in Ukraine there are little resources for families that have children with disabilities. My mom had to research hard online and learn how to help Vova to learn subjects in school. She also learned how to teach Vova speaking. When she went to behaviors professionals they were not too sure how to help. Likely, my mom found center for children with disabilities where Vova can socialize.
It is difficult for children with disabilities to learn how to socialize because not many citizens in Ukraine are aware of those children. Also, in Ukrainian society, it is shameful to have children with disabilities, and that is why some parents do not tell anyone about their children's disabilities. Likely, there is a charitable organization that decided to show Ukrainians that children with disabilities are also part of the society and those children should be respected and have all of the necessary resources that other children have. Part of that awareness was taking pictures of families with disabled children. My mom and Vova were one of the first families that participated in the photoshoot.
